“But I thought the two of you believed in total honesty with each other.”
“There’s no reason to get her all upset over this.”
“How do you know she would be upset? Maybe she would surprise you, Dad.”
“I think, for now at least, we can just discuss this, man-to-man.”
“For that, I’m going to need another drink.” Luke swung his boots to the floor and went to the liquor cart.
His father watched him pour the amber liquid from the crystal decanter. “Is it serious?”
Luke put the stopper back in the decanter and returned to the desk. He dropped into his chair. “Yeah. It’s serious.”
“Do Luz and Javier know?”
Luke set his glass down on the desk blotter. “No. Mercy doesn’t want them to know. She can’t stand for what we have together to stir up old animosities. I wanted her to come to the party tonight. She refused.”
“A wise decision on her part.”
Luke picked up his glass again. But instead of drinking from it, he set it back down—hard. Booze sloshed onto his hand. He licked it off. “As far as I’m concerned, Dad, this war between her family and ours is nothing but bull—”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Davis cut in before he could finish. “Her father hates us. All of us. You included. You’re a Bravo and that makes you the enemy. If you care about her—and about your own family—you’ll end it with her.”
The irony was he would probably lose her anyway, now. Once she knew that Davis knew, the moment he’d been dreading would come. She would have to make a choice.
Luke had a very strong feeling that the choice wouldn’t go in his favor. “Go to bed, Dad.”
Davis rose. He set his glass on the edge of the desk. “You think I don’t wish it could be different? In my day, I tried to bridge the gap. To end the war that started when your grandfather won that horserace and claimed this land for our family. But it’s…what it is, between them and us. It’s better to accept it. Stay clear of them. Whenever we get mixed up with them, it always ends in trouble.”
“It’s crap, Dad. Just old noise.”
“Give her up, son. Find someone else.”
“It’s none of your business. Stay out of it. Stop making Zita and the Hoffmans spy for you. It’s beneath you.”
“If you would only listen to—”
Luke threw his drink. It shattered against the far wall. Booze and broken glass rained down. Quietly, for the second time, he said, “Go to bed, Dad.”
Finally, Davis turned and left him.
Chapter Nine
M ercy woke Friday morning missing Luke. She smiled at her own neediness. He’d come to her Wednesday night. She would see him after work tonight. Really, she had to get over this hunger to be with him every minute of every day.
She almost called him before she left for the clinic, just to hear his voice. But she told herself she was being silly. Tonight would be soon enough. She would go to him at Bravo Ridge, as they had agreed when he left her bed Thursday morning before dawn.
